What to Expect in the 3rd grade

Welcome to Third Grade!

We are so excited to work with you and your child this school year! Here are some important pieces of information to know about 3rd grade.

Communication:

Communication is an important key to your child’s success. Each day, please ensure to check your child’s folder for important events happening at school and to see the work that they’ve completed that day. Homework will also be found in this folder, should they have homework that day.

Classes:

In third grade students are self contained and work with their homeroom teacher for all core/academic subjects. Students do, however, switch for Special area classes including Gym, Library, Art, Music, and STEAM.

Grading:

Each nine weeks your child will receive a progress report and report card. Progress Reports are sent home mid-way through each report period. Report cards will be issued after each nine-week period. A letter grade is given for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. Science and Social Studies will be given letter grades every other 9 weeks.

Homework:

Homework is a valuable aid in helping students through a positive educational experience. It is useful in reinforcing, extending, and generalizing concepts taught in class and develops good study habits. We expect students to try their best on their homework. Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children.

Please provide the necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, and provide praise and support. Don’t let your child avoid homework. Please contact your child’s teacher if a problem is beginning to develop. Please check with individual teacher on class specific homework policies as they may vary slightly.

Behavior Expectations:

At the Primary Center we focus on three core “Viking Values” of being Kind, Capable and In Control. These values will drive our classroom rules and expectations. Please reiterate the importance of following school-wide expectations at all times and I’m all areas of the building. Failure to do so may result in loss of privileges and progressive consequences.

Excuses:

When your child is absent, please send an excuse when they return explaining why your child was absent. This also applies when your child is tardy or requires an early dismissal. Please remind your child to give their teacher the note upon their arrival. Unexcused or excessive absences may result in communication from Mr. Messina.

Conferences:

If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, please call their 3rd grade teacher to schedule a phone conference or set up a meeting time.
