What to Expect in the 2nd grade

Home-Communication Folders (aka Green Folders):

These folders are sent home at the beginning of the year with students. We expect our students to take the folders home every night, and remove and review any papers that are inside. Students may keep all the work on the “Keep at Home” side of the folder. Papers on the “Return to School” side of the folder should be completed and returned the following day.

Attendance and Excuses:

Did you know? Missing school one day per week means missing one full year of instruction for every five years that they are in school. More importantly, did you know? We want to see your amazing child every day, and it is very important to his/her continued success to be present each day. We understand that students may need to miss school on occasion. When your child is absent, please send an excuse when they return explaining why your child was absent. This also applies when your child is tardy or requires an early dismissal. Please remind your child to give their teacher the note upon their arrival. Unexcused or excessive absences may result in communication from Mr. Messina.

Behavior Expectations:

At the Primary Center we focus on three core “Viking Values” of being Kind, Capable and In Control. These values will drive our classroom rules and expectations. Please reiterate the importance of following school-wide expectations at all times and I’m all areas of the building. Failure to do so may result in loss of privileges and progressive consequences.

Classes:

In second grade students are self contained and work with their homeroom teacher for all core/academic subjects. Students do, however, switch for Special area classes including Gym, Library, Art, Music, and STEAM.

Grading:

Each nine weeks your child will receive a progress report and report card. Progress Reports are sent home mid-way through each report period. Report cards will be issued after each nine-week period. A letter grade is given for Reading, Language Arts, and Math.

Homework:

Homework is a valuable aid in helping students through a positive educational experience. It is useful in reinforcing, extending, and generalizing concepts taught in class and develops good study habits. We expect students to try their best on their homework. Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children.

Please provide the necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time, and provide praise and support. Don’t let your child avoid homework. Please contact your child’s teacher if a problem is beginning to develop. Please check with individual teacher on class specific homework policies as they may vary slightly.
