What to Expect in the 1st grade

Welcome to 1ST Grade! You, your child, and the 1st grade teachers all form a team! A rewarding year will be accomplished by working together. We are all part of the success! Here are a few important things to know about 1st grade

Green Communication Folders:

Parent/Teacher communication is essential in your child’s education. One way to communicate is through the use of your child’s green Communication Folder. Your child will bring home the green Communication Folder daily. One side of the folder contains homework and any communication from the school The other side of the folder contains the work your child completed in class that day. The “Keep at Home” side should be cleaned out daily. Send back anything on the “Return to School” side the next day. Also, your child’s spelling words will be in the back sleeve of the folder. Please be sure to review your child’s folder every night.

Grading:

Each nine weeks your child will receive a progress report and report card. All progress reports and report cards will be posted on the Edustar website. A letter grade is given for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. Specials are graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading system.

Homework:

Homework is a valuable aid in helping students through a positive educational experience. It is useful in reinforcing, extending, and generalizing concepts taught in class, and develops good study habits. We expect students to try their best on their homework. Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Homework should be given top priority. Please provide the necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment, set a daily homework time and provide praise and support. Don’t let your child avoid homework. Please contact us if a problem is beginning to develop.

Excuses:

When your child is absent, an excuse must be sent in explaining why your child is absent. The excuse should be brought in when your child returns. A note should also be sent in if your child is tardy or has an early dismissal. Please remind your child to give their homeroom teacher the note upon his or her arrival.

Conferences:

If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, please call their 1st grade teacher to schedule a phone conference or set up a meeting time. Teachers will also be setting up conferences as needed to discuss any behavioral or academic concerns. Please make every attempt to attend these meetings.

Communication:

It is imperative to your child’s education that we are in communication on a regular basis. Please update your teacher with a change in any contact information. If you are unable to answer a phone call, email, or text, please respond as soon as possible.
